Are you depressed or anxious? Do you feel your life is in crisis, or you've reached your breaking point? Or, perhaps you are not in crisis, but you feel dissatisfied or unfulfilled, and life is not what you had imagined. Maybe you’ve found yourself in yet another disappointing relationship, or you feel stuck in your career. Maybe the coping mechanisms that once worked no longer help enough.

You may think that because you are not clinically depressed, a psychiatrist wouldn't be able to help. In fact, exploring the mind, particularly those parts of which you are not consciously aware, can help you to overcome obstacles and find a more gratifying life path. Psychotherapy and/or medications can help you live a more rewarding and fulfilling life.

Dr. Berman is a psychoanalyst in private practice on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, where she has practiced for over 15 years. In addition to private practice, Dr. Berman is on the faculty of both the New York Presbyterian and Columbia Presbyterian Hospitals, where she teaches and supervises.

Dr. Berman has clinical expertise in a broad range of conditions including depressive and other mood disorders, anxiety disorders, panic disorder, and personality disorders.

My Philosophy

Mental wellness is a state of physical and mental well-being, characterized by a sense of balance, resilience, and fulfillment. Each person has a different path to achieving mental wellness. In making a recommendation for treatment, I will look at you as a whole person in the context of your life, and I will tailor my recommendations to you. We will discuss your individual needs and goals and find your path to help you to improve self-knowledge, adaptability, and fulfillment in life.

I use principles of exploratory or psychodynamic psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, supportive psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and integrative psychiatry. I may also make non-pharmacologic lifestyle recommendations, such as meditation and diet modification, to complement the work we are doing.

Each person is unique, and my treatments are tailored to the individual.

Treatments may consist of psychotherapy alone, medication, or a combination of the two. I use principles of exploratory or psychodynamic psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, supportive psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and integrative psychiatry. At the end of our consultation, I will make a recommendation based on your needs and treatment goals. I will also tailor the style and intensity of the psychotherapy to suit your individual needs and goals.
